In this article, we discuss aftercare for tooth extraction and offer tips for pain management and rapid healing.
Aftercare for Tooth Extraction: Pain Management and Healing Tips
Tooth extraction recovery typically takes 10 to 14 days. Let us look at the most important rules that will help you manage pain and swelling and have your recovery go without complications:
Ensure That Your Oral Hygiene Is Sufficient
Good oral hygiene during recovery from tooth extraction is essential to prevent infections. You should brush your teeth twice a day and floss every evening. However, be careful when cleaning around the extraction site to avoid irritating the gums or disturbing the blood clot in the socket. The blood clot is crucial for recovery, and dislodging it leads to a painful condition called dry socket. Also, to avoid disturbing the clot, do not forcefully swish water in your mouth.
Reduce Swelling and Pain
Swelling and pain are expected during the first 3 to 4 days after tooth extraction. However, swelling can be managed and reduced by keeping your head elevated throughout the day and at night (for example, by using an extra pillow) and applying cold compresses to the outer side of your cheek. Hold a cold compress for 15 minutes at a time and always take 30-minute breaks before applications. You can safely repeat the procedure 3 to 4 times a day.
Post-extraction pain and soreness typically can be well managed with over-the-counter painkillers. However, make sure that you do not exceed the recommended daily dose, as it can take a toll on your liver and kidneys.
Adjust Your Diet
For the first 2 days after tooth extraction, you will need to switch to a liquid diet to prevent food from getting stuck in the healing socket and to let the jawbone rest. Examples of a liquid diet include:
- Broth
- Pureed soups without solid vegetables or meats
- Smoothie
- Kefir
- Yogurt
Then, until your recovery is complete, adhere to a soft diet, with foods that do not require a lot of chewing and biting, for example:
- Mashed potatoes or other vegetables
- Soft bread without seeds
- Soft-boiled vegetables
- Soft cutlets
- Soups
- Pasta
- Eggs
Make sure to avoid hard or crunchy foods throughout your recovery. When your socket has healed sufficiently, start introducing the foods you normally eat slowly.
Do Not Use a Straw
Using a straw for drinking creates suction in the mouth and can dislodge the blood clot that forms in the socket, which, as we mentioned before, leads to pain and complications.
Avoid Strenuous Activities
Strenuous activities, such as sports, fast walking, bending, or lifting heavy objects, increase blood flow to the head and may result in swelling, bleeding, or blood clot damage in the first days after tooth extraction. We recommend abstaining from physical exertion for about 10 days after the surgery, then gradually resuming it.
Take Plenty of Rest
Rest and sleep help your body regenerate faster. That is why we recommend that, during your recovery, you sleep for at least 8 hours every night and take plenty of rest during the day.
Follow Your Dentist’s Recommendations
Depending on your anatomy, oral, and general health, tooth extraction recovery recommendations may vary. We recommend closely following your dentist’s advice and, if you are prescribed antibiotics, taking the entire course as directed.
